3.1 WHAT IS PUBLIC JOURNAL
The Public Journal is the circulation layer of Public Intelligence.
It brings ideas into public view — not as conclusions, but as observations in motion. Through a regular rhythm of publication, the Journal engages with developments as they unfold. It connects signals from different domains — policy, cities, economy, technology, and everyday life — and reads them through their implications for collective life.
It is not designed to report events, nor to present opinions.
Its role is to support a different mode of attention:
one that observes carefully, connects across contexts, and allows meaning to emerge over time.
Each issue is structured around a theme.
Rather than covering topics broadly, it curates a set of perspectives that illuminate a shared question from different angles. What is included is not determined by visibility or immediacy, but by relevance to public understanding.
The Journal is published on a monthly basis in digital form.
This creates a steady rhythm of engagement — allowing ideas to circulate, settle, and be revisited. Additional updates are shared only when there is something of substance to add.
Within the Public Intelligence ecosystem, the Public Journal functions as an observatory.
It keeps the system attentive to the present — while feeding into deeper reflection through Monologue, informing application through Bangkok Design Lab, and connecting current developments to longer-term considerations in Thailand by Design.
In this sense, the Public Journal is not defined by the volume of content it produces.
It is defined by the role it serves:
making it possible to observe, connect, and think — together, over time.
3.2 CURRENT PUBLIC JOURNAL
PUBLIC JOURNAL ISSUE 00
The Public Journal is organised around themed issues.
Each issue is structured to support a gradual process of understanding — moving from framing, to exploration, to reflection.
Issue 00, Democracy by Design, follows this structure.
It begins with a Prologue, which introduces the central question and sets the context for the issue.
An Interlude follows, providing a pause in the flow — creating space to reflect before moving into the main body of the journal.
The core of the issue is developed through five sections.
Each section approaches the central theme from a different perspective, bringing together references, cases, and observations that illuminate the question in distinct ways.
Rather than forming a linear argument, these sections are designed to be read as a set of connected viewpoints.
The issue concludes with an Epilogue, which returns to the broader context — allowing the ideas explored throughout the journal to settle and connect back to the initial question.
This structure is not intended to prescribe how the journal should be read.
It provides a framework that allows understanding to develop gradually — through movement between context, observation, and reflection.
